Bringing Business, Government, Higher Education and the Open Source Community together to leverage the benefits of Open Source Software
TAOSE Open Source Initiative is a joint effort of the Center
for Information Technology and Security (the Center) and The Open
Source
Technology Alliance (TOSTA), in association with the Center's Academic
Partners: Inver Hills Community College, Metropolitan State University,
and
Minneapolis Community Technical College.
This collaborative group seeks to raise awareness
of open
source technology as a viable solution in the enterprise and provide a
trusted,
centrally organized entity for open source information and resources to
enable
open source implementation.
TAOSE stands for "Trusted Adoption of Open Source in the Enterprise."
Trusted: Built through government, academic and professional business interests, TAOSE offers a holistic and objective perspective on open source software and systems. From openly addressing and debating open source benefits and issues; to reviewing real-world case studies; to providing resources for information, products and services; TAOSE provides an unbiased, reality-based viewpoint.
Adoption: Open source has evolved and matured to a point where it meets (and sometimes exceeds) enterprise needs, integrating with proprietary software and fulfilling quality, performance and security requirements. Many organizations have established clear strategies to harness the benefits of open source. Some organizations aren't fully aware of the extent to which they are already using open source. TAOSE seeks to help enterprises through all stages of open source adoption - from initial investigation and business case formulation to implementation resources that make open source a reality.
of Open Source: Open source software has evolved well beyond the days of solo-developer "freeware" or "shareware" into robust, commercially viable, enterprise-quality applications that compete with and integrate with proprietary software, offering potential benefits in cost, flexibility, security, quality and performance. Recognizing that open source needs to work in a blended environment with proprietary software and systems, TAOSE helps address implementation of open source is a complementary component for enterprise models. A diverse global community is continuously creating and enhancing open source offerings - spanning software, hardware and services; TAOSE creates a centrally-organized structure for understanding and tapping these rich, yet dispersed, resources.
in the Enterprise: Open source offers benefits for organizations in all sectors and size categories, including large and small commercial businesses, as well as governments and educational institutions. TOASE is a resource for all stakeholders in the open source value chain - from software developers and marketers (open and proprietary), to consultants (business, IT, legal, security), to resellers and integrators, to enterprise management and end-users.
The TAOSE Forum Series is a four-part schedule of presentations and discussions to facilitate the adoption of open source technology in the enterprise.
The Open Source Forum Series features industry experts addressing key issues on how organizations can make OS productive immediately. Each half-day seminar will feature a general state-of-the market introduction, a business case study on how to achieve ROI, a presentation of available OS solutions and an in-depth open discussion on key issues - plus networking opportunities.

Whether you are a C-Level Executive or IS Leader responsible for mapping your organizations IT strategy, TAOSE Forum Series will provide you with information, technical resources and networking opportunities you need to take advantage of the benefits inherent in open source use.
…and Why
The Future of Open Source is Now.
The Open Source Forum will give you the knowledge you need to utilize Open Source solutions in your organization. Open Source adoption continues to grow, yet many organizations are uncertain how to leverage the benefits of OS technology. TAOSE Forum Series will help organizations evaluate and implement open source, addressing key issues such as the development of sound OS strategies and managing the risks associated with open source.
Prominent members of the OS Community will address vital topics at each Forum seminar. These industry and academic experts will identify and explain key issues regarding productivity, cost-benefit analysis, and the immediate impact of Open Source applications on enterprise initiatives. Real-world enterprise case studies will examine return on Investment (ROI) achievements and describe available OS solutions that support successful business strategies.
TAOSE Forum Series provides reliable, value-added information and resources for business, technical, and legal interests - plus networking opportunities - to better analyze the issues surrounding open source use and take action to adopt open source in your organization.
#1 Making Open Source into a Supported Product - Intro to the Certified Stack Concept: March 23, 2007
Topic: Introduction to the range of Open Source Solutions and the "Certified Stack" concept
- plus OS Support: What to Look for and Where to Find It
Business Case: Successful Use of (a complete certified stack solution)
Product: (a complete certified stack solution)
Sponsored by: Unisys
The appeal of open source solutions is obvious. They're cheaper to acquire, deploy, and maintain than proprietary software. The "certified stack" concept provides assurances of interoperability, integration, security and support to enable OS to operate in a blended software environment. (Proprietary and Open Source) Certified Stack providers such as Unisys and others provide:
This session features a presentation from Unisys on the Certified Stack concept, a case study and an overview of the Unisys Certified Stack offering
#2 Open Source Operating Systems: April 27, 2007
Topic: Using (an open source operating system)
Business Case: ROI for (an open source operating system)
Product: (an open source operating system)
Sponsored by: TBD
Linux* is about more than an operating system. It's about applications and databases that run on Linux. It's about technical support. It's about consulting expertise. It's about training. And most importantly, it's about you. How will Linux help you run your business better. Here are some things to consider about Linux adoption:
They can do this because Linux Distributions have achieved the highest levels of security and operations certifications ever achieved in the Linux market.
This session features a presentation from Red Hat on the Linux operating system, a case study and an overview of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) offering.
#3 Open Source Databases: May 18, 2007
Topic: Is an Open Source Database right for your organization? Where do I find Support
Business Case: in-depth Success Story with a Solution Based on (an open source database)
Product: (an open source database) and Support Services
Sponsored by: TBD
For years, proprietary database companies have been adding new features that are seldom, if ever, used. What's worse is that the continued addition of unnecessary features has resulted in overly complicated systems that are slower, more resource intensive, harder to maintain and more prone to failure. Some number of applications will have high functional requirements and in these cases, Oracle, IBM DB2 or Microsoft SQL Server is appropriate. However, for many applications, MySQL, PostgreSQL and other open source databases are a much less expensive to own and run. They are also faster and more reliable – even at very high levels of users and transactions.
This session features a presentation from MySQL on open source databases, a case study and an overview of the MySQL database.
#4 OS Middleware for Your Enterprise Applications Today: June 22, 2007
Topic: Open Source Middleware
Business Case: Successful (open source middleware) implementation
Product: (open source middleware)
Sponsored by: TBD
Over the decade, open source technologies have made a tremendous impact on software, affecting each of its many layers. From operating systems to databases to applications, there is an obvious shift in momentum created by open source that is affecting organizations worldwide, including proprietary software vendors. While technologies like Linux and MySQL and Postgre SQL on the OS/database side and SugarCRM, Alfresco Enterprise Content Management, and others on the application side are crucial to the success of applications, the middleware layer plays an extremely important role as well.
There are cutting-edge open source technologies that are enterprise-ready, that focus is on the middleware layer—that is, the layer between the operating system/database and the application itself and they are driving the future of middleware.
This session features a presentation from JBoss on open source middleware, a case study and an overview of the Jboss middleware offering.
